Why Student Should learn about the Civil War?
Students need to learn about the Civil War for many different reasons. The first thing that students need to learn are the reasons behind the causes of the war. Understanding that the Civil War wasn’t just fought over racism is the first thing. Students must learn and grasp the economic, social, and cultural ramifications caused by slavery. It is also important that students realize the barriers that had to be defeated to accomplish the end of slavery which also were the causes of the Civil War. Learning about the abolitionist movement, national debates on slavery, the South leaving the union, the dramatic presidential election, and Lincoln’s success as a president will help students understand both sides. When students learn about the South’s choice to depart from the United States it not only created its own form of government, but also its own currency. When the South left the union, it took many key leaders from the United States government and military with it. By learning about the different causes and effects of the Civil War, students not only learn about the events that occurred in our nation’s history, but how decisions made that long ago are still in place and insuring our rights.
